☀️1788

June 21 is the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere — the longest day of the year, when the Sun reaches its maximum northern declination. Ancient civilisations — Stonehenge, Machu Picchu, Chichen Itza — built monuments aligned with the solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere the start of astronomical summer is celebrated; in the South, it is the winter solstice. On June 21, 1788, the US Constitution was ratified.

🎵1982

On June 21, 1982, Prince William Arthur Philip Louis was born at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London — eldest son of the Prince of Wales Charles and Diana Spencer, and heir to the British throne. William, who became Prince of Wales in 2022 when his father was proclaimed King Charles III, has been married to Kate Middleton (today Princess of Wales) since 2011 and has three children.

🌍1945

On June 21, 1945, the Battle of Okinawa — the last great Pacific battle of World War II — ended with Japanese defeat. The battle, lasting 82 days, was the costliest in the Pacific theatre: 107,000 Japanese soldiers died, along with 12,000 Americans and between 100,000 and 150,000 Okinawan civilians. The brutality of Okinawa was one of the arguments for dropping the atomic bombs in August.
