On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa — the largest land invasion in history — with more than 3 million soldiers attacking the USSR along a 3,000-km front. Hitler expected to conquer the USSR within three months. The campaign failed and became the largest theatre of operations of the war: between the USSR and Germany it caused more than 30 million deaths.

On June 22, 1940, France signed the armistice with Nazi Germany in the same railway carriage — the Rethondes wagon — in which Germany had signed its capitulation in 1918, in Hitler's deliberate humiliation. France was divided: the north under German occupation and the south governed by the collaborationist Vichy regime. The armistice triggered General De Gaulle's appeal from London.

On June 22, 1986, at the Mexico World Cup, Diego Armando Maradona scored in the same match the two most famous goals in football history: the "Hand of God" — with his hand, unseen by the referee — and the so-called "Goal of the Century" — a 60-metre run past five English players — against England in the quarter-final. Argentina won 2-1 and went on to win the World Cup.
