On August 24, 1814, British troops entered Washington D.C. and burned the Capitol, the White House and several federal buildings during the Anglo-American War. President James Madison was forced to flee the capital. It is the only time since independence that a foreign power has captured and occupied the United States capital.
On August 24, 79 AD, Vesuvius erupted catastrophically, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under metres of ash and pyroclastic material. Thousands of people died trapped. The layer of ash preserved buildings, everyday objects and even bodies in extraordinary detail, creating the most fascinating archaeological site of the ancient world.
On August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union redefined the concept of planet and downgraded Pluto to the category of dwarf planet. The decision, taken in Prague, sparked a worldwide controversy: Pluto had been considered the ninth planet since its discovery in 1930. It is now classified as part of the Kuiper Belt alongside similar bodies.
