On August 25, 1989, the Voyager 2 probe flew past Neptune at less than 5,000 kilometres from its surface, becoming the only spacecraft ever to visit the most distant planet in the solar system. The images revealed winds of more than 2,000 km/h, a large dark spot similar to Jupiter's, and a previously unknown ring system.
On August 25, 1944, General Charles de Gaulle entered Paris at the head of the French 2nd Armoured Division, completing the liberation of the capital after four years of Nazi occupation. Crowds cheered him on the Champs-Élysées in one of the most moving scenes of World War II. That same day, the German commander of Paris signed the surrender.
On August 25, 1825, the Cisplatine Congress declared the independence of Uruguay from Brazil and its reunification with the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. The process culminated in 1828 with international recognition of Uruguay as an independent republic, thanks to British mediation between Argentina and Brazil. The date is celebrated as Uruguayan Independence Day.
