On December 25, 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Emperor of the West in the Basilica of St Peter's in Rome, restoring the Western Roman Empire that had disappeared in 476. The coronation strengthened the alliance between the papacy and secular power and established the model of medieval European Christendom that would endure for centuries.

On December 25, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev delivered his resignation speech as president of the Soviet Union and the red flag with the hammer and sickle was lowered from the Kremlin to be replaced by the Russian tricolour. The USSR formally ceased to exist after 74 years. It was the end of the Cold War and the beginning of a new world order.

On the night of December 25-26, 1776, General George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River with 2,400 soldiers in a secret operation and surprised Hessian troops at Trenton, capturing nearly 1,000 soldiers with minimal losses. The Battle of Trenton was the first major American victory of the War of Independence and revived the morale of the patriot army.
