On December 25, 800, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Emperor of the West in the Basilica of St Peter's in Rome, restoring the Western Roman Empire that had disappeared in 476. The coronation strengthened the alliance between the papacy and secular power and established the model of medieval European Christendom that would endure for centuries.
