On December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Sumatra, triggered the deadliest tsunami in history. The giant waves devastated the coasts of Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and other countries, killing more than 227,000 people. The catastrophe mobilised the largest international humanitarian operation of all time.
On December 28, 1997, a Peruvian guerrilla siege that lasted 126 days ended in Lima. But on December 26, 1991, the Soviet Union was formally dissolved when the Supreme Soviet voted itself out of existence. The dissolution ended the Cold War and reshaped global geopolitics, creating 15 independent successor states from the former USSR.
On December 26, 1871, the first performance of Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky took place at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The work, initially received coolly, would become the most performed ballet in the world and the quintessential symbol of this art form. The definitive version premiered two years after the composer's death.
