On December 27, 1945, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank were formally created through the signing of the Bretton Woods Agreements by 29 countries. On December 27, 1571, astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler was born in Weil der Stadt, Germany, discoverer of the laws of planetary motion that bear his name. Kepler demonstrated that planets orbit the Sun in elliptical, not circular, paths, laying the mathematical foundations that would allow Newton to formulate his law of universal gravitation.
On December 27, 1979, Soviet special forces stormed the Tajbeg Palace in Kabul and assassinated Afghan president Hafizullah Amin, replacing him with pro-Soviet Babrak Karmal. The operation, known as Storm-333, completed the Soviet takeover of Afghanistan begun three days earlier and marked the start of a war that would last ten years and exhaust the USSR.
