On July 26, 1956, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser announced the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, until then controlled by Franco-British interests. The decision triggered the Suez Crisis, an international conflict that marked the definitive decline of European colonial power in the Middle East.

On July 26, 1953, a young Fidel Castro led the Attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba, the armed raid that would mark the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.
