On June 27, 1967, Barclays Bank installed in Enfield, London, the world's first cash machine (ATM) — an invention by Scotsman John Shepherd-Barron, who according to legend was inspired by chocolate vending machines. The first customer was actor Reg Varney. ATMs revolutionised banking services: there are now more than 3 million worldwide.

🏊1880

On June 27, 1880, Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama — who at 19 months became deaf and blind following an illness. Thanks to her teacher Anne Sullivan, she learned to communicate and became the first deafblind person to earn a university degree (1904). Helen Keller was a political activist, writer and universal symbol of overcoming disability. Her story was immortalised in the play "The Miracle Worker".

🌍1950

On June 27, 1950, US President Harry Truman authorised US military intervention in the Korean War, two days after North Korea invaded the South. The decision, taken without a formal congressional declaration of war and backed by a UN resolution, was the first major conflict of the Cold War. The US led a coalition of 16 countries fighting under the UN flag.
