💣1914

On June 28, 1914, Bosnian-Serb student Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo, firing two shots when the imperial car passed in front of where he was standing. The assassination, combined with pre-existing national and imperial rivalries, triggered World War I within weeks — which would kill 20 million people.

🏳️1919

On June 28, 1919, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Treaty of Versailles was signed at the Palace of Versailles, officially ending World War I. The treaty imposed on Germany guilt clauses, war reparations and territorial losses that humiliated the country and created the breeding ground for the rise of Nazism two decades later.

🏳️‍🌈1969

On June 28, 1969, New York police raided the Stonewall Inn gay bar in Greenwich Village, triggering the Stonewall Riots, in which customers — many of them transgender people and drag queens — resisted police harassment. The riots marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ liberation movement and the origin of Gay Pride.
