🌍1930

On July 30, 1930, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in the final of the first FIFA World Cup in history, held in Montevideo. The tournament brought together thirteen national teams and confirmed football as the world's defining sport. Uruguay lifted the trophy in front of more than 68,000 spectators at the Estadio Centenario.

🇺🇸1945

On July 30, 1945, the US cruiser USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Pacific Ocean and sank in twelve minutes. Of its 1,196 crew members, only 316 survived: rescue did not arrive for four days. It remains the greatest loss of life at sea in the history of the United States Navy.

🚀1971

On July 30, 1971, the Apollo 15 lunar module landed on the Hadley Rille plain, beginning the most ambitious Apollo mission to date. For the first time, astronauts David Scott and James Irwin would use the lunar rover to travel across the Moon's surface and collect samples several kilometres from the module.
