On October 30, 1918, the Ottoman Empire signed the Armistice of Mudros with the Allies, ending its participation in World War I. The agreement marked the beginning of the dismantling of the Empire, which would culminate with the Treaty of Sèvres in 1920 and the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, giving rise to the modern Republic of Turkey.

On October 30, 1938, CBS broadcast the radio adaptation of H.G. Wells's "The War of the Worlds", narrated by Orson Welles as a real news bulletin about a Martian invasion. According to legend, the realism of the broadcast caused mass panic across the US, though later studies have questioned the true scale of the panic. It remains a landmark in communication history.
