On October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday, the Wall Street stock market crashed catastrophically, triggering the Great Depression. Thousands of investors lost everything. Unemployment reached 25% in the United States and the crisis spread worldwide, destabilising economies and paving the way for the political extremism of the following decade.
On October 29, 1969, the University of California, Los Angeles sent the first message over ARPANET, the precursor network of the internet. The message was addressed to the Stanford Research Institute. Only the first two letters, "LO", arrived before the system crashed. Thus began the most important communications revolution in history.
On October 29, 1923, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey proclaimed the Republic of Turkey, with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as its first president. The new republic, born from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire, embarked on a radical modernisation of the country: secularism, Latin alphabet, women's suffrage and legal reform. October 29 is Republic Day in Turkey.
