☮️1962

On October 28, 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis came to an end when Nikita Khrushchev publicly announced the withdrawal of Soviet missiles from Cuba. In return, the US pledged not to invade the island and to quietly withdraw its missiles from Turkey. The thirteen days of maximum nuclear tension had ended without war.

On October 28, 1922, thousands of National Fascist Party Blackshirts marched on Rome, pressuring King Victor Emmanuel III to appoint Benito Mussolini as Prime Minister. The March on Rome was the first rise of a fascist party to power in Europe and directly inspired Adolf Hitler in his own coup attempt the following year.

On October 28, 1886, President Grover Cleveland inaugurated the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, the gift of the French people to the American people. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with the metal structure by Gustave Eiffel, the statue became the most recognisable symbol of the US and a welcome to millions of immigrants.
