On December 5, 1901, animator and producer Walt Disney was born in Chicago, founder of Disney Studios and creator of Mickey Mouse. Disney revolutionised animation with the first sound animated feature film (Snow White, 1937), built Disneyland in 1955 and created the largest entertainment empire of the twentieth century.
On December 5, 1933, Utah became the 36th state to ratify the Twenty-First Amendment to the US Constitution, ending Prohibition, which had banned the production and sale of alcohol in the US since 1920. Prohibition had failed by generating a thriving black market controlled by organised crime and figures such as Al Capone.
On December 5, 1791, Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died in Vienna, aged 35, leaving his Requiem unfinished. His death remains a matter of debate: the official cause was acute rheumatic fever, though theories of poisoning persist. Mozart left more than 600 works and is considered one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
