On December 6, 1978, Spaniards approved the Spanish Constitution in a referendum — the fundamental law of the democratic system established after the Franco dictatorship. The text, approved with 87.9% of votes in favour, enshrined Spain as a social and democratic state governed by the rule of law and recognised the autonomous communities. December 6 is celebrated as Constitution Day.

On December 6, 1917, Finland proclaimed independence from the Russian Empire, taking advantage of the chaos of the Bolshevik Revolution. Bolshevik leader Lenin recognised Finnish independence just two weeks later. Finland is one of the few countries to have gained independence from Russia relatively peacefully, though its own civil war broke out weeks later.

On December 6, 1956, the English group that would become The Beatles began performing regularly in Liverpool, though they were then called The Quarrymen. John Lennon had founded the group that same summer. It would be the seed of the phenomenon that, a few years later, would change world popular culture forever. In 1960 they would definitively adopt the name The Beatles.
