On January 6, 2021, thousands of supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol during the session certifying Joe Biden's electoral victory. The attack, in which five people died, was the most serious assault on the symbol of American democracy since the War of 1812 and led to Trump's second impeachment in Congress.
On January 6, 1412, Joan of Arc was born in Domrémy, France — the peasant girl who at age 17 convinced the Dauphin Charles VII to let her lead the French army against the English during the Hundred Years' War. Joan raised the siege of Orleans and accompanied the king to his coronation. Captured, she was burned at the stake at age 19. She was canonised in 1920.
On January 6, 1838, American inventor Samuel Morse gave the first public demonstration of the electric telegraph and Morse code in Morristown, New Jersey. The system, which encoded messages into dots and dashes transmitted by electrical wire, revolutionised long-distance communications and was the direct precursor of the telephone, radio and modern telecommunications.
