🔭1610

On January 7, 1610, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei first observed with his telescope the four main moons of Jupiter — today called the Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. The discovery proved that celestial bodies existed that did not orbit the Earth, refuting geocentric cosmology and supporting Copernicus's heliocentric model.

✏️2015

On January 7, 2015, two armed Islamist terrorists burst into the editorial offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris and killed twelve people, including the publication's most prominent cartoonists. The attack, claimed by Al Qaeda in Yemen, triggered the largest demonstrations in French history, with the slogan "Je suis Charlie" as a symbol of press freedom.

🇷🇴1990

On January 7, 1990, the provisional government of Romania that replaced the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu — overthrown and executed on December 25, 1989 — legalised political parties, beginning the country's democratic transition. Romania was the only country in the Eastern Bloc where the fall of communism came through a violent popular uprising that cost more than 1,000 lives.
