On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated surprise attack on Israel on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. In the opening hours, the Israeli army was overwhelmed on both fronts. The Yom Kippur War lasted sixteen days, ended with a UN-imposed ceasefire, and triggered the 1973 oil crisis.
On October 6, 1973, the Egyptian army under President Anwar Sadat crossed the Suez Canal and broke through Israel's Bar-Lev Line defensive system. The operation, perfectly coordinated with the Syrian advance on the Golan, was the most successful Arab military action against Israel. Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by army members opposed to his subsequent peace agreements.
