On July 8, 1947, the US Army announced the recovery of the remains of a "flying disc" that had crashed near Roswell, New Mexico. Hours later, the statement was retracted and replaced with the version that it was a weather balloon. The Roswell Incident became the starting point of popular culture about UFOs and extraterrestrial conspiracies.
On July 8, 1497, Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama departed from Lisbon at the head of a fleet of four ships with the aim of finding a direct sea route to India by rounding Africa. On May 20, 1498, he arrived at Calicut, opening the spice route. The voyage transformed world trade and consolidated the maritime power of Portugal.
On July 7, 2005, four Islamist terrorists detonated three bombs on the London underground and one on a double-decker bus, killing 52 people and injuring more than 700. The attacks, known as 7/7, occurred one day after London was chosen to host the 2012 Olympic Games and were the worst terrorist attacks on British soil since World War II.
