On July 9, 1816, the Congress of Tucumán proclaimed the Declaration of Independence of the United Provinces of South America, which would give rise to the Argentine Republic. The declaration, championed by General José de San Martín, was the starting point of a process that would also lead to the independence of Chile, Peru and Bolivia. July 9 is Argentina's Independence Day.

On July 9, 2011, South Sudan became the world's youngest country by formally declaring independence from Sudan, following a referendum in which 98.8% of the population voted for separation. The split ended decades of civil war that had cost millions of lives. Juba became the capital of the world's newest independent state.

On July 9, 1821, Greek admiral Andreas Miaoulis won an important naval victory over the Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Chios, during the Greek War of Independence. The Greek naval victory was crucial in sustaining the revolution on land. The war, supported by European powers such as Britain, France and Russia, culminated in Greek independence in 1830.
