On September 8, 1966, the American network NBC aired the first episode of Star Trek, the science fiction series created by Gene Roddenberry. With a multiracial and multicultural crew in the 23rd century, the series raised reflections on tolerance, exploration and the future of humanity. It would become one of the most influential entertainment franchises in history.

On September 8, 1991, North Macedonia held an independence referendum from Yugoslavia, with an overwhelming result in favour of sovereignty.
