On June 9, 1934, Donald Duck made his first appearance in the Disney animated short "The Wise Little Hen". The character, created by animator Dick Lundy, would become one of the most popular cartoon characters in the world, starring in more than 150 shorts. Donald Duck is distinguished by his irascible temperament and his famous sailor suit without trousers.

On June 9, 1954, American lawyer Joseph Welch delivered before the US Senate his famous line to Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Army-McCarthy hearings: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?". The words marked the end of McCarthy's political career and the decline of McCarthyism.

On June 9, 1781, the Battle of Cape Spartel took place during the American War of Independence, as Spanish and French forces confronted the British fleet off the Straits of Gibraltar. The engagement was part of Spain's strategic involvement in the American revolutionary conflict, in which it had entered war against Britain in 1779 to recover Gibraltar and Florida, successfully regaining the latter by the war's end.
